After an afternoon of hard-fought contests that were affected by the strongest wind of the competition, Alvarino Garcia's 7-1 defeat of Sjef van den Berg of the Netherlands was relatively straightforward.

"There is so much emotion," he said. "It's my first individual medal. When the anthem started playing, I felt really Spanish and it was really overwhelmingly emotional."

Van den Berg, who was ranked 101 in the world before the competition, said: "I feel like I've done a good job and Garcia shot really, really well."

Anton Prilepov of Belarus won the bronze medal match, defeating Poland's Slawomir Naploszek 7-3.
