153 UN staff killed as Palestinian-Israeli conflict escalates

More than 150 UN staff have been killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at an open debate in the UN Security Council.

"Tragically, 153 UN staff have been killed,” he said. Guterres added that the UN staff is also providing the Palestinian population with medical services and goods, supporting the work of a small number of still functioning bakeries, and delivering food to shelters.

He also called on all parties to the conflict to cooperate with the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag. The appointment of a coordinator for Gaza is one of the requirements of UN Security Council Resolution 2720, adopted in December 2023. Kaag began her duties on January 8.
