2 Azeri officers, 1 Armenian soldier killed in clashes

Two Azerbaijani army officers and an Armenian soldier were killed in latest clashes south of Azerbaijan's rebel region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a statement on its website Armenian saboteurs had attacked Azerbaijani positions in Fuzuli District overnight, killing two officers and injuring one soldier.

Nagorno-Karabakh's defense ministry said one of its soldiers was killed during the clashes.

Last week, separatist authorities said Azerbaijani forces killed one of their soldiers, while Baku said three of its officers had been injured in a cease-fire violation.

Backed by Russia, Armenia captured nearly 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts, in a war after the Soviet Union's breakup in 1991.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a ceasefire in 1994 but no peace agreement has been signed.
