Another veteran of the 1990s Karabakh war in Azerbaijan has reportedly set himself alight in protest. The chairman of the Karabakh War Veterans' Union, Etimad Asadov, told RFE/RL on January 29 that Maarif Valiyev poured gasoline over himself and lit himself on fire in front of the local administration building in the village of Alpout in central Barda district on January 28.Asadov said Valiyev was protesting the refusal of local authorities to provide him with land to build a house for his family.Valiyev's action follows the death of 42-year-old Zaur Hasanov after he self-immolated last month after years fighting perceived injustices inflicted by a senior pro-government official.
