Arif Yunus, a political analyst who works for the non-governmental Peace and Democracy Institute, has been arrested, his lawyer Xaliq Bagirov said.

Yunus, who was charged with high treason last month and put under house arrest, was detained when he was on his way to the Kurdaxani detention center, where his wife, Leyla Yunus, is being held on the same charges.

Arif Yunus was taken to the Prosecutor-General’s Office, which requested court to sentence him to detention pending trial, the lawyer said. 

Leyla Yunus was arrested on July 31, prompting condemnation of the Azerbaijani government’s handling of critical voices.

Leyla is known for his criticism of the government.
