Armenia says Moscow rejected candidacy of new ambassador to Russia

The Armenian authorities have decided to replace Ambassador to Russia Vagharshak Harutyunyan, reported from Interfax, citing the Armenian newspaper Iravunk.

"According to our reliable data, Ambassador of Armenia to Russia Vagharshak Harutyunyan will be recalled. However, Russia rejected the candidacy of the current member of parliament Gurgen Arsenyan for the post of the new ambassador," the report noted.

Harutyunyan, who previously served as head of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, was appointed ambassador to the Russian Federation on January 5, 2022.

Arsenyan is considered one of the major Armenian businessmen, is a member of parliament, a member of the ruling Civil Contract faction. Armenian media note that Arsenyan previously made anti-Russian statements.
