Armenia says Nagorno-Karabakh talks 'constructive'

(RFE/RL) - Yerevan says talks in Paris on October 27 between Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian and Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev were "constructive, useful, and sincere."

The statement was issued on October 28 by Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, who said the leaders discussed many issues related to a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Nalbandian also said the two also discussed confidence-building measures proposed by French President Francois Hollande.

Hollande urged both parties to show "political will" to overcome their differences over the disputed region.

Hollande also said maintaining the status quo in the conflict is unacceptable.

Sarkisian said Yerevan remains committed to finding a negotiated peace to the Karabakh conflict.

Violence has increased recently along the line of contact between Armenian Karabakh forces and Azerbaijani troops, with more than 20 soldiers killed there since August.

Armenian-backed separatists seized Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan.
