Armenian man detained in western Azerbaijan

An Armenian national was detained at the border with Azerbaijan on January 28.

Mamika Khojoyan, 65, was held by local residents in the village of Alibayli in the western Tovuz District. The villagers handed him over to the authorities.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Khojoyan guided an Armenian sabotage group that attempted to infiltrate into Azeri positions.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are technically at war over Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenians captured the mountainous region and seven adjacent districts from Azerbaijan in a war after the Soviet Union’s breakup in 1991.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a ceasefire in 1994 and the sides have yet to sign a peace agreement.

Despite the ceasefire, three servicemen have been killed and several civilians injured in clashes in the past ten days.
