Armenian president meets Karabakh mediators in Yerevan

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan yesterday met the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Igor Popov of Russia, James Warlick of the USA and Jacques Faure of France, in Yerevan.

The meeting was also attended by Anjey Kasperchik, personal representative of the OSCE chairman-in-office.

The co-chairs “shared their impressions of meetings held in Baku and discussed issues pertaining to further steps to be taken towards a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict”, Sargsyan’s office said.

The mediators are trying to arrange a new meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents, who last met in November, Popov said.

Armenians captured nearly 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts, in a war after the Soviet Union’s breakup in 1991.

About 12,000 Azerbaijani nationals were killed and 1 million displaced before Russia brokered a ceasefire in 1994.

The sides have yet to sign a peace agreement despite more than 20 years of talks.
