Armenians attack Azerbaijan’s Naxcivan region: report

Armenian armed forces attacked the village of Lakatag in Culfa District in Azerbaijan’s autonomous region of Naxcivan (also spelled as Nakhchivan), Regnum reported.

“A firefight is going on at the moment,” the Russian news agency said, citing local resident Aynur Serkerova. “Residents of Lakdag are fleeing their homes. There are casualties among Azerbaijani forces.”

A spokesman for Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry denied the report, saying the “situation is under control”.

Artsrun Hovhannisyan, head of the Armenian Defense Ministry’s press service, also dismissed the report as "absolute lie”, according to Mediamax news agency.

Two Armenian troops were killed on the border with Naxcivan earlier this month.

Armenia captured nearly one-fifth of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts, in a war after the Soviet breakup in 1991.

Major hostilities ended with a ceasefire in 1994 but no peace agreement has been signed.
