Armenians are carrying out illegal excavations in Azerbaijan’s occupied territory, including the Fuzuli District, which is home to Azikh Cave, one of the oldest living sites of humans.

The cave was discovered by a group of archaeologists from the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan in 1960. It is considered to be the site of one of the most ancient proto-human habitations in Eurasia. A Neanderthal-style jaw bone found in 1968 is thought to be over 300,000 years old and thus one of the oldest proto-human remains found in this part of the world. Its discovery gave rise to the term Azykh Man.

Armenian separatists resumed excavations at the site in 2002, taking archaeological finds to museums in Armenia and Western countries.

Modern.az obtained some pictures of the cave.
