Austria has no plans to join NATO

Austria doesn't intend to join NATO, but doesn't refuse partnership with the alliance, either, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said, reported from TASS.

"Militarily, we are a neutral state. We do not plan to join NATO. For us, the European security architecture consists not only of NATO, but also of the EU, the OSCE,” he said on ORF radio.

Austria has been participating in the NATO Partnership for Peace program since 1995 and intends to continue this interaction, he noted.

Schallenberg was also invited to the NATO summit, which takes place in Washington on July 9-11, but did not go amid Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Vienna. "He is accompanied by [Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam] Jaishankar, so I should be here,” the diplomat added.
