Berti Vogts, who has coached Azerbaijan’s national football team since 2008, has resigned, AFFA, the country’s football authority, said in a statement.
Vogts, 67, stepped down following a meeting yesterday in Zurich with AFFA President Rovnaq Abdullayev.
Abdullayev and the German manager discussed the latest Euro 2016 match which Azerbaijan lost to Croatia 0-6.
“Vogts regretted to say that he does not see his future in the Azerbaijani national team,” AFFA said. “He said the team did not play well in the latest match. He said the physical preparedness of the players is still a problem, which cannot be resolved within a short period of time.”
Abdullayev offered Vogts to stay as Azerbaijan coach, adding AFFA appreciates the job he has done in the past six years but he would not agree, the statement read.
