Azerbaijan commemorates 26th anniversary of Khojaly Genocide

On February 25-26, 1992, Armenia’s armed forces, together with the 366th infantry regiment of Soviet troops, stationed in Khankendi, committed an act of genocide against the population of the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly.

Nearly 2,500 Khojaly residents, who remained in the encircled town, began to move towards Aghdam. But they were ambushed by Armenian troops.

As many as 613 people, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 old people were killed as a result of the massacre. A total of 1,000 civilians became disabled in the onslaught. Eight families were completely annihilated, 130 children lost one parent, while 25 lost both parents. Some 1,275 innocent residents were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 people (68 women, 26 children) still remains unknown.

The damage inflicted to Azerbaijan as a result of the Khojaly genocide is estimated at $170 million.

The Khojaly genocide victims are commemorated every year in Azerbaijan and other countries with deep mourning. Azerbaijan’s embassies and diaspora organizations abroad organize commemorative events and conferences dedicated to the Khojaly genocide.

The "Justice for Khojaly” international awareness campaign was launched in May 2008 on the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, General Coordinator for Intercultural Dialogue of the Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue. The campaign is aimed at bringing to the world community the truth about the Khojaly tragedy and achieving its recognition worldwide.

International coordinator of the campaign is www.justiceforkhojaly.org website.
