Azerbaijan court announces verdict for those convicted of fighting in Syria

The Baku Court on Grave Crimes has today announced a verdict on the cases of Azerbaijani citizens - Bakhtiyar Shahbazi, his son Bahruz Shahbazi and Sadig Mammadzadeh - three of whom are convicted of fighting within the Islamic State and other armed groups.

According to the verdict, Bakhtiyar Shahbazi was sentenced to 14 years in prison, Bahruz Shahbazi – 12 years in prison and Sadiq Mammadov – 14 years, APA reports.

There are charged under the Criminal Code’s articles #279.1 (creation of armed formations or groups, which are not provided by the legislation of the Azerbaijan

Republic, and also participation in their creation and activity, supplying them by weapon, ammunition, explosives, military engineering or military equipment) and 28, 283-1.3 and 283-1.3 (involvement of the citizens of the Azerbaijani Republic and stateless people permanently residing in the Azerbaijani Republic in spreading religious denominations, participating in armed conflicts abroad under the guise of performing religious rites or religious hatred, combat training for this purpose, setting up the stable groups in this regard and leading such groups).
