Azerbaijan imposes compulsory medical examination requirement for those wishing to marry

It will be forbidden to demand the couple reveals the results of medical examination once they present a health certificate confirming they have undergone medical examination

Under the decree signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on 17 December, the requirement on compulsory medical examination of those wanting to marry will enter into force on 1 January 2015.

In compliance with the law on amendments to the Family Code passed by the parliament on October 17, couples who have decided to marry will be required to undergo medical examination on the diseases listed by the Cabinet of Ministers.

According to the law, couples, with their own request, will be able to undergo medical examination and also be given consultation on genetic, psychological and family planning issues – all free of charge – at state or municipal medical facilities connected to their residential area. On top of the results of their medical examination, they will also be given a health certificate confirming they have undergone medical examination. The certificate will verify the completion of medical examination and medical consultation, but does not show the results of examination.

It will be forbidden to demand the couple reveals the results of medical examination once they present a health certificate confirming they have undergone medical examination.
