Azerbaijan inflicts losses on Armenian occupying army

The Defense Ministry in Baku said it thwarted attempts by two Armenian "sabotage and reconnaissance groups” to attack Azerbaijani army positions near the occupied region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The enemy lost several servicemen, including Tigran Simonyan, commander of a special-purpose army unit, the ministry said in a statement on its website.

Many more were injured before Armenians were forced to retreat.

There were no casualties on the Azerbaijani side, according to the statement.

Armenians confirmed the death of a 24-year-old serviceman named Tigran Samvelovich Simonyan.

He was killed by fire north of Nagorno-Karabakh at around 19:55 on February 10, the region’s "defense army” said, without specifying who opened the fire.

Armenia captured nearly one-fifth of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts, in a war after the Soviet breakup in 1991.

While major hostilities ended with a cease-fire in 1994, no peace agreement has been signed.

Armenia has yet to comply with four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal from the occupied territory.
