Political consultations were held yesterday between the Foreign Ministries of Azerbaijan and Iran in Baku.
The Azerbaijani delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov and the Iranian delegation was led by Deputy Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour.
Khalafov stressed the importance of Rahimpour`s visit to Baku for the expansion of Azerbaijani-Iranian ties.
He said Azerbaijan attached great importance to relations with Iran, noting there was wide potential to expand bilateral relations in trade, economic, transport, communication, energy, tourism and humanitarian fields.
Touching on the Armenia-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, Khalafov said the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory by Armenia, including 132 km of the Azerbaijan-Iran state border, was the main obstacle to peace and security and sustainable economic development in the region.
Ebrahim Rahimpour said Azerbaijan was an important partner for Iran, adding his country is interested in developing cooperation with Azerbaijan, state news agency Azartac said.
