Azerbaijan joins Lugar Institute for Diplomacy and Congress

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) welcomed the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Azerbaijan as the newest members of the Richard G. Lugar Institute for Diplomacy and Congress.

GMF Senior Transatlantic Fellow, Senator Richard Lugar remarked, “Azerbaijan is a strategic ally, a commercial partner, and a friend of the United States. Ambassador Suleymanov’s participation in this Institute demonstrates his commitment to engage and strengthen the U.S.-Azerbaijan relationship.  Germany is a global leader and an essential partner of the U.S. on all major international policy challenges, including Iran’s nuclear program, energy policy, and the global economic crisis. I am grateful to Ambassador Ammon for joining us as a key partner in this endeavor. I am delighted that these countries have taken the important step to join the Lugar Diplomacy Institute.”

The Lugar Diplomacy Institute, founded in June 2013, aspires to increase cooperation and understanding between the foreign diplomatic community in Washington, DC and the United States Congress. The Institute convenes regular meetings with ambassadors, members of Congress, and experts to openly discuss pressing issues of mutual concern, and provides training and networking opportunities for new diplomats in Washington.
