Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan agree to build TASIM’s underwater segment

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have agreed to build an underwater section of the planned Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM), Azerbaijan’s Communications and High Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov said on Jan. 17.

Abbasov said a contract with Kazakhstan is expected to be signed in the first half of the year and construction work can start by the end of 2015.

The TASIM project is to build a major transit line from Frankfurt to Hong Kong through China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Germany.

A second alternative northern transit line is planned to be built across Russia, Ukraine and Poland.

A source in Azerbaijan’s telecom market told Trend that Azerbaijan plans to intensify talks with Kazakhstan for construction of the underwater segment of TASIM.

The active phase of the talks between the two countries is expected to start in 2015.

TASIM’s construction is planned to start in 2016.
