Azerbaijan says two soldiers missing on Armenian border

Two Azerbaijani army servicemen went missing on June 23 on the border with Armenia, the Defense Ministry in Baku said on its website.

The servicemen, Musa Musayev and Tural Yolcuyev, are believed to have lost their way in western Qazax District and ended up on the Armenian side of the border, the ministry said.

The ministry is investigating all circumstances of the incident, it said.

Armenian news website News.am cited the country’s Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan as saying that no Azerbaijani soldier ended up on the Armenian side of the border.

The soldiers may have been killed in a landmine explosion on the border, he said.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in a state of war since the early 1990s when Armenia captured Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven adjacent districts.

While major hostilities ended with a cease-fire in 1994, no peace agreement has been signed.
