Azerbaijan strengthens control over detection of COVID-19 genetic variants

Control has been strengthened in Azerbaijan to detect genetic variants of the coronavirus, Deputy Director-General of the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Azerbaijani Health Ministry Afag Aliyeva said.

According to the ministry official, since the infectivity of the Omicron strain is several times higher, it is more widespread in the world. In this regard, Azerbaijan has strengthened control over detecting genetic variants of the coronavirus. The results of scientific research show once again that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent complications that can be caused by new and rapidly spreading dangerous variants of the virus. Vaccination has been carried out in Azerbaijan since January 18 last year and has been successfully continued to this day. As a result of the active participation of the population in the vaccination campaign, the epidemiological situation in the country has remained stable.

She noted that the increase in daily COVID-19 incidence is observed not only in Azerbaijan but also in many European and post-Soviet countries: "Despite the sharp increase in the number of infections in Azerbaijan, hospitalization of people with positive test results does not develop with the same dynamics, and the number of daily hospitalizations remains stable. The main reason for this is that vaccinated people have the lighter form of the disease when infected with the virus.”

Aliyeva also revealed the most common symptoms of Omicron: "The symptoms of the Omicron strain are often similar to the signs of an acute respiratory infection. The new strain mainly affects the upper respiratory tract - nose and throat, and is less common in the lungs than other strains of coronavirus infection. The most common symptoms of Omicron are headache, runny nose and sore throat. People infected with the new strain also complain of fatigue, fever, body aches and night sweats.”
