Azerbaijan will do everything possible to prevent its citizens from going to fight in Syria, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said. 

“We certainly do not want our citizens to die in Syria,” Mammadyarov said today, according to the ministry. “The necessary measures will be taken to prevent that.”

Dozens of Azerbaijani nationals have been killed in Syria’s three-year civil war. Most of them fought against forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

The Baku-based Board of Muslims of the Caucasus issued a fatwa last month banning the country’s Muslims from joining the Syrian war.
