Azerbaijan toughens regulations on use of mobile phones

Azerbaijan's government has introduced a series of amendments to regulations "on the sale and use of communication devices".

The changes apply to dealers, distributors, as well as phone operators.

As of August 22, a contract signed between the operator and the buyer shall include one passport-size picture and a copy of ID. This amendment in particular will prevent individuals from purchasing sim cards for others.

From now on, customer information will be sent and registered by the Data Processing Center at the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies.

The sim cards will be operational within 24 hours.

Another amendment includes a ban on lending one’s sim card to another person for a long term or renting the card out.

Also in case of a loss or robbery, the user will have to inform the Ministry of Interior.
