Azerbaijan is in talks with Turkey on a new agreement that will oblige Ankara to help Baku militarily in case of a third-party attack, Haqqin.az reported, citing an unnamed Turkish official.
The chief of the Turkish military staff, Necdet Ozel, is planned to visit Baku today to discuss the agreement with Azerbaijani officials, it said.
NATO gave Turkey the go-ahead to sign the agreement with Azerbaijan after the Russian annexation of Crimea, the pro-government news website said.
Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry confirmed the chief of the Turkish military is planning a visit. The ministry said on its website Ozel will meet Azerbaijani military officials, without giving further detail.
Turkey is Azerbaijan’s closest political and economic ally.
