The Azerbaijani ambassador to Russia, Polad Bulbuloglu, has said his government isn't going to join the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union of former Soviet republics.

"Azerbaijan is an independent state and no one can force us to do anything against our will," Bulbuloglu said on the sidelines of a Russian-Azerbaijani economic forum in Qabala. "The Azerbaijani government is closely watching the developments around the Eurasian Economic Union. We can consider this in the future if it interests us."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who visited Baku last week, said Moscow would be happy to see Azerbaijan in the trade bloc although Baku had yet to be formally invited to join.
