Azerbaijani envoy: Mines in Karabakh - big humanitarian problem

Mines in Karabakh are a big humanitarian problem, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the Holy See Ilgar Mukhtarov said in an interview with the Italian news agency Agenzia Nova.

"For almost thirty years, the Armenians have planted more than 1.5 million mines in the territory of Azerbaijan. After the liberation of these lands from occupation, only a little more than 10 percent of the territory has been cleared. According to international organizations, mine clearance will take decades,” the Azerbaijani diplomat said.

Mukhtarov stressed that all this doesn’t allow people to return to their homes. In addition, it creates an obstacle to large-scale restoration and construction work carried out in these areas, he added.
