Azerbaijani serviceman killed as Armenia violates ceasefire

A serviceman of Azerbaijani Armed Forces, Agil Melikov, was killed Nov. 15 as a result of shelling of the Azerbaijani army positions by Armenian Armed Forces on the contact line of the two countries’ troops, the press service of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense reported.

The serviceman, who died as a result of another provocation by the Armenians, has been presented to be awarded with the 3rd degree medal "For distinction in military service” posthumously.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the deceased.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
