Azerbaijan's Abakarova recalls beating champions in Rio

Azerbaijani female Taekwondo fighter Patimat Abakarova, who won the bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, said that she is very grateful for the support of Azerbaijan's Taekwondo Federation.

Speaking with Trend, Abakarova recalled her performance at the Olympics.

"In my first bout I met with Serbian athlete [Tijana Bogdanović], and despite that I've previously beaten her, something went wrong and I lost. She reached the finals, and I had to go for the bronze medal," Abakarova told Trend.

"I first met with two-time Olympic champion Wu Jingyu from China, then with World Champion from France [Yasmina Aziez], both were tough, but I beat them," Abakarova said.

She went on to add that the hardest part was to get a grip after the first loss and continue.

Azerbaijan, represented by 56 athletes at the Rio Olympics, captured 18 medals (1 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze). The country was among the top 15 countries at the Olympics, which hosted a total of record 206 countries.

Azerbaijani athletes represented the country in 18 sports disciplines.
