Azerbaijan’s former Defense Minister Safar Abiyev didn’t receive Czech citizenship, and reports that he left the country are not true, Turan news agency reported, citing one of Abiyev’s relatives.
"These reports are absolutely groundless,” the unnamed relative told Turan. "He [Abiyev] is receiving medical treatment abroad and will return home soon.”
Azerbaijan’s embassy in Prague said it has "no information” about Abiyev receiving Czech citizenship.
Several news websites last week claimed Abiyev had move out of the country and received a Czech passport.
Abiyev, Azerbaijan’s longest-serving defense minister, was replaced in 2013 after 19 years in office.
