Azerbaijan’s state oil company Socar cuts jobs

Azerbaijan’s state oil company Socar has cut 7,222 jobs as it seeks to meet international standards by getting rid of Soviet-style support units, Vice President Xaliq Mammadov has said.
Of the workers made redundant, 6,418 were re-employed by other units of the company, Mammadov told reporters today in Baku, the capital.
The company has drawn up a program to retrain 108 others who will be able to apply again when new vacancies open, he said.
Socar plans to create 4,376 new jobs this year, he said.
The Baku-based company is Azerbaijan's largest employer with just over 60,000 staff members at the moment, he said.
