Azeri civilian killed by Armenian fire near Karabakh

A resident of Azerbaijan’s Tartar District was killed byArmenian sniper fire while fishing on a river, police said.

 

Mubariz Aliyev, a father of two, was shot dead on July 19 in thevillage of Asagi Cayli, northeast of the rebel region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

 

Aliyev’s body remained in the area for hours as Armenian forcesdidn’t allow Azeri police to retrieve it.

 

The body was taken later in the day and handed over to the man’sfamily for burial.

 

Armenians captured nearly one-fifth of Azerbaijan’sinternationally-recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and sevensurrounding districts, in a war after the Soviet breakup in 1991.

 

Large-scale hostilities ended with a ceasefire in 1994 but nopeace agreement has been reached.

 

Armenia has yet to comply with four UN Security Councilresolutions passed in 1993, calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawalfrom the occupied territory.

 

Azerbaijan has vowed to use military force to regain control ofthe territory should peace efforts fail.
