Azeri court orders detention of two opposition activists

A Baku court has sentenced two members of the opposition ReAL (Real Alternative) movement to seven days of administrative detention.

The Sabail District Court sentenced ReAL activists Elsan Qasimov and Togrul Ismayilov to seven days of administrative detention for putting up resistance to police, the report said.

According to lawyer Elcin Sadiqov, they were detained by plain-clothes on the evening of 14 August en route to a printing house to pick up campaign print materials in support of the leader of the opposition ReAL movement, Ilqar Mammadov. The latter was sentenced in 2014 to seven years of imprisonment on charges of organizing riots in Ismayilli District in central Azerbaijan in January 2013. On 22 May 2014, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that his detention was illegal.
