Azeri court sentences rights defender to over five years in prison

An Azerbaijani human rights defender has been sentenced to 5 years and 48 days in prison, the APA news agency reported on 9 June.

Following an appeal by a prosecutor, the Sirvan District Court of Appeals issued a verdict against the chairman of the Public Union for the Protection of Human Rights and Liberties, Rasim Alizada, arresting him in the court.

He was detained in October 2012 over swindling that caused damage on a large scale. In February 2015, the Baku Court of Appeals commuted his 7-year prison term and sentenced him to 5 years and 48 days of probation instead, the report said.
