Isa Shahmarli, a 20-year-old gay rights activist in Azerbaijan, committed suicide, hanging himself in an apartment in Baku’s Yasamal district. 

Before his death, he wrote on Facebook: “This country, this world is not for me. You are all guilty for my death. Tell my mother that I loved her so much.”

Shahmarli himself was openly gay. He had founded an NGO to protect gay and lesbian rights.
