President Ilham Aliyev yesterday met Iran's Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Khamenei in Tehran.
According to Azerbaijan's state news agency Azartac, Khamenei recalled his meetings with former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev. He expressed confidence that Ilham Aliyev's visit to Iran would help expand relations between the two countries.
Khamenei said he believed Azerbaijani-Iranian relations would continue developing owing to the closeness and common roots of the two nations.
The Iranian supreme leader touched on the Armenia-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying his country backed settlement of the dispute based on Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity.
Sayyid Ali Khamenei said the Azerbaijani president had big experience, and wished the people of Azerbaijan prosperity.
President Ilham Aliyev praised Azerbaijani-Iranian relations, saying common historical, cultural and religious roots formed strong foundations for their development.
The Azerbaijani president said the two countries supported each other on the international level.
He stressed the role of the joint commission in expanding the bilateral economic relations.
