Azeri troops practice overcoming enemy's positions on frontline - minister

The Azerbaijani Armed Forces have practiced overcoming the frontline of the enemy in an operational-tactical exercise, Azerbaijani Defence Minister Zakir Hasanov said in an interview to ANS TV.

"The forces participating in the drills are the most prepared and active troops and tactical groups of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, who will actively participate in possible future battles. Therefore, today, our exercise is held in conditions similar to a real battle and various types of troops and tactical groups will break the frontline of the imaginary enemy and major combat forces, including artillery and air support, will join the drills," Hasanov said.

He also said that "since the beginning, the defence ministry has tried to hold the drills in most difficult conditions similar to a real battle in order to examine what we could teach the staff and what our advantage is, and how our newly-purchased weapons are used in conditions of modern warfare".

Some 25,000 Azerbaijani soldiers, more than 300 tanks and armoured vehicles, over 100 rocket and artillery installations, as many as 40 military planes and more than 30 air defence systems are taking part in the drills near the line of contact with Armenian/Karabakh troops, shooting ranges in the Naxcivan Autonomous Republic, and in the Caspian Sea.
