"According to the source, Biden advocates for Ukraine to be exempted from participating in the NATO Membership Action Plan. This means that Kyiv will not be required to participate in the multi-year plan and prove that the country has done the necessary defense, economics and politics reforms,” the agency writes.
The report states that from the American point of view, Kyiv's accession to NATO will become an urgent issue only after the end of the Ukrainian conflict.
On July 10, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the leaders of the countries of the alliance continue to discuss the proposal to cancel the action plan for Ukraine on membership in the alliance.
"We are discussing a package of proposal ," he said at a press conference in Vilnius. Stoltenberg explained that this package includes three proposals he had formulated earlier: work on the interoperability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and NATO, the creation of the NATO-Ukraine Council, and the abandonment of the NATO Membership Action Plan in the case of Ukraine.
"There are no final decisions yet," Stoltenberg added at the time.
The NATO Membership Action Plan is a program designed to help countries applying for membership in the alliance meet all the requirements.
The NATO secretary general explained that if NATO abandons this program for Ukraine, this will mean the abolition of one of the stages on the path of Kyiv to the alliance.
