The European Union (EU) welcomes the decision of the Group of Seven to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine and expects to be able to deliver them soon, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Monday upon his arrival at the meeting of the EU foreign ministers, reported from TASS.

"This is a very good idea, this is an excellent step by the G-7 to finally start preparing the conditions for the supply of fighters. Pilot training has already begun - this is the first thing to be done, and I really hope that we will soon be able to supply this weapon to Ukraine," he said.

Borrell added that the foreign ministers on Monday will discuss the allocation of a new tranche for weapons from the European Peace Fund for Kyiv.

Borrell has said in the past that he increasingly feels like an EU defense minister rather than the head of European diplomacy.

On May 21, US President Joe Biden at a press conference on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima said that the US, together with its allies, would begin training Ukrainian pilots, including for flying F-16 aircraft.
