Bulgaria intends to buy more gas from Azerbaijan – PM

Bulgaria intends to buy more natural gas from Azerbaijan, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, reported from foreign media.

According to him, the current moratorium imposed on electricity prices in the country will expire in March: "We want to analyze whether there are leaks in the system and when the leaks will be stopped. Thus, we will be able to determine the minimum amount that the final consumer must pay. It is the easiest way to increase the previous prices before carrying out such an analysis, but this will not be the government's policy. On the other hand, we are trying to determine whether we will buy more gas from Azerbaijan, where the prices are lower."

In late 2021, Petkov said that Bulgaria wanted to buy 1 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas produced from the Shah Deniz field. The minister said that the gas sold by Azerbaijan was 60% cheaper than natural gas obtained from other sources.

From the beginning of 2021, Azerbaijani gas was supplied to Bulgaria in accordance with the agreement between the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the Bulgarian company Bulgargaz on providing 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.

The IGB is designed to transport blue fuel from Shah Deniz 2 to Bulgaria. Through this pipeline, which will join TAP, Bulgaria will import 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year from Azerbaijan. Thus, the state company Bulgargaz EAD has signed a contract with the Shah Deniz consortium to purchase this amount of gas from the Shah Deniz-2 field. Azerbaijan will be able to meet 25-30% of Bulgaria's gas needs. Construction work on the IGB is expected to be completed in the second half of next year
