Cavusoglu: Turkish parliament won't approve protocol on Sweden and Finland's NATO membership

Cavusoglu: Turkish parliament won't approve protocol on Sweden and Finland's NATO membership
31.01.2023 17:00
The Turkish authorities will not agree to the entry of Sweden or Finland into NATO until they meet Ankara's demands under a tripartite memorandum, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

"We cannot say yes to their membership in NATO until our demands are met. Our parliament won't ratify this protocol in the current realities. The idea of creating NATO is to ensure the security of member countries of the bloc. Candidate countries must take into account Ankara's position in this area," he said.

According to Cavusoglu, Turkiye is ready to get back to negotiations with Sweden on joining NATO when Stockholm fulfills its obligations. "If Sweden fulfills its obligations, then we will sit down and talk. But at the moment we cannot support Sweden's membership in NATO," the minister said.

As he noted, Turkiye is currently more positive about Finland's bid for NATO membership than about Sweden's appeal.
