Elman Rustamov, the chairman of Azerbaijan’s Central Bank, received the visiting Iranian minister of economic affairs and finance, Ali Tayyebnia, in Baku on Jan. 30.
Rustamov stressed the importance of expanding cooperation between the Azerbaijani and Iranian central banks, the Baku-based regulator said on its website.
For his part, the Iranian minister said he was pleased with the level of cooperation with Azerbaijan and its Central Bank. Tayyebnia expressed the hope that the ties will expand further.
Speaking to reporters in Baku a day earlier, Tayyebnia proposed that Iran and Azerbaijan should switch to their own currencies, i.e. rial and manat, in trade.
The minister said the issue needs to be discussed by the two countries' central banks.
