Paper Round's view: It's hard to know quite what to make of this. We've known for some time - at least, we think we've known - that United haven't offered Rooney a new deal since his summer dalliances with Chelsea, and that the club are happy with this stance. But just last month there were reports that United are actually putting together a new, four-year deal that would be worth a staggering £52 million for the 28-year-old. Of course Chelsea were interested in the United striker last summer, and given their woes up front they probably will be in the next few transfer windows - with a figure of £35m plus £300,000-a-week in wages doing the rounds of late. But the whole "red alert" stuff out of nowhere is a bit bizarre. We seem to have gone from amicable stand-off to Defcon 1 overnight without any apparent new developments, and it's all rather difficult to swallow.(uk.eurosport.yahoo.com)ANN.Az
