An international chess championship will be held in the Russian capital on April 25 to honor Vugar Gashimov, an Azerbaijani chess grandmaster who died of brain tumor earlier this year.
The tournament will be organized by the Moscow bureau of the New Breath movement jointly with the Foundation for the Development and Revival of Azerbaijani Culture.
Togrul Allahverdiyev, head of the Moscow office of the New Breath movement, said in an interview with ANN: “We will organize a competition jointly with the Foundation for the Development and Revival of Azerbaijani Culture. Although he died very young, Vugar Gashimov did a great job to promote Azerbaijani chess in the world. Therefore, we decided to organize an international chess championship in his honor. It will be attended by leading chess players from around the world.”
