Child sex offenders could be CASTRATED

Child sex offenders could be chemically castrated under a controversial new law that's being discussed.

The New South Wales state government is considering the plan, and has appointed a taskforce to determine whether chemical castration should become a sentencing option for guilty offenders.

It's also looking at whether the current use of anti-libidinal treatments in the NSW correctional system could be expanded.

The taskforce will be comprised of experts from a number of fields, including health and legal experts, victim group Bravehearts, police and government officials, according to the ABC.

The plan has been backed by NSW Justice Minister Troy Grant, who said all options need to be considered to tackle the problem of child sex abuse.

'If we can make improvements that save just one child from this horrendous crime, it will be worth it,' Mr Grant said.

'One of the worrying statistics that came out of our investigation is that up to 17 per cent of child sex offenders are likely to reoffend in two years.

'We must do everything possible to reduce that figure.'

Mr Grant, a former police officer, also flagged the potential use of other anti-libidinal treatments for convicted paedophiles.

'Anti-libidinal medication alone is not a cure-all, but I want to make sure we make the very best possible use of it, combined with other strong measures, to prevent reoffending,' he said.

The taskforce is expected to announce its findings by the end of the year.
