The unnamed toddler was playing unattended near the glass door when a customer opened it and it closed on the girl's head.

Her parents, who were dining in the restaurant, in Nanning, the capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province, rushed over to try and help when she began crying in pain. 

But they were unable to free her head from between the glass door and the frame and firemen had to be called.

The firefighters then expanded the gap with tools and managed to free the girl after adding soap to the area immediately around her neck.

She was taken to hospital for treatment but it is unclear what injuries she suffered.

Medics confirmed to local media that the child was alive, but no more information was given about her current condition.

Eyewitness Zhu Ma told a local TV station said: 'The child was crying the whole time and her parents were trying to calm the little girl down. It was really distressing.'
