And unlike his half-hearted bopping with Serena Williams at Wimbledon in July, this time the world No 1 really let rip.  

Djokovic bopped to the Bee Gees back in July as he revived an old tradition by dancing with Williams at the Wimbledon champions' dinner and the world No 1 seemed to be seeing the disco lights again, throwing shapes with a New Yorker in front of a jubilant home crowd. 

The Serb took his time to find his rhythm against Haider-Maurer before shifting through the gears to claim a 6-4 6-1 6-2 win at the end of day three at Flushing Meadows. 

The No 1 seed will now play Italian Andreas Seppi in round three, but Djokovic's post-match interview was hijacked as one fan jumped down from the stands to cajole him into showing some dance moves while music blared out around the arena.

The nine-time grand slam champion seemed only too happy to oblige as the pair performed a short jig, which ended with Djokovic high five-ing his partner and putting on an 'I love New York' t-shirt, handily supplied by the fan, who also had one himself.

'I'm glad that he came down to the court. It was not planned,' Djokovic said in his press conference after the match. He insisted that he had seen the fan, whose routine seems to involve stripping down layers of t-shirts while dancing outrageously, at his matches for five years.

'He's a true entertainer... Each year I see him in one of my matches, dancing, taking down the layers of the t-shirts. But, you know, it never gets old.'

After clinching his third Wimbledon title two months ago, Djokovic took to the stage with Williams to become the first champions to dance officially since Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert in 1976.

Serena called the tune on that occasion, ignoring Djokovic's request for a 'sophisticated waltz', but having looked ever so slightly stiff at SW19, the 28-year-old appeared to find the 'Gangnam Style' jig in New York more to his liking.

Djokovic, who was watched courtside by Hollywood star Jamie Foxx and One Direction's Niall Horan, only needed 91 minutes to see off world No 52 Haider-Maurer, who was unable to muster a single break point, but the tournament favourite admitted afterwards that it was far from plain sailing. 

'I think he had an average serve of 130 miles per hour, so he came out firing from that shot in his game,' said Djokovic, who is looking to add to his solitary US Open triumph in 2011.

'All in all, it was good to not stay too long on the court and get the job done in three sets. Whenever I come here, I know that conditions suit me well, that I feel good on the court. 

'I play very good tennis. I obviously try each year to get myself in a position to fight for the trophy. That's no different this year.'
