Gas storage targets have been set at 90% for next winter and the EU should be able to meet this target even in the event of a complete lack of Russian gas, provided EU Member States cooperate on supplies, the EC said.
Imports of Russian gas to European countries in 2022 decreased by more than 50%, to about 80 billion cubic meters. Deliveries stopped along the main route - the Nord Stream - and the balancing route - Yamal-Europe, and were also three times reduced by the Ukrainian route. Now Russian pipeline gas is supplied to Europe through one of the two entry points to the gas transportation system of Ukraine and through Türkiye, where it comes via the Turkish Stream and Blue Stream.
The European Union, in March 2022, developed the RePowerEU plan, which outlined measures to phase out fuel imports from Russia, improve energy supply security and support the green transition, and proposed further measures to reduce demand for gas and electricity.
