Iran may join the Trans-Anatolia pipeline (Tanap) if it produces as much natural gas as it plans by 2018, the country’s ambassador in Baku said.

"We’re looking into the possibility of buying equity in Tanap,” Mohsen Pak Ayen said. "We may buy equity in the pipeline if we reach our production targets by 2018.”

The 1,850-km pipeline is expected to deliver gas to Turkey in 2018 and to the European Union in 2020.

Azerbaijan’s state energy company SOCAR holds 58 percent of the project estimated to cost $11 billion.

Partners include Turkish state pipeline company Botas, which holds 30 percent, and BP (12 percent).

Iran's energy company Nico is a partner in Azerbaijan's BP-led Shah Deniz natural gas development.
