The Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) will create a new alternative for energy supply to Europe, said Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Erdogan made the remarks Oct. 10 addressing the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul, the TRT Haber news channel reported.
He noted that TANAP is an important project for Europe.
Erdogan added that Turkey, as a country transiting energy resources, is helping to strengthen Europe’s energy security.
The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region to the European countries through Georgia and Turkey.
At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor project. Other sources can also join this project at a later stage.
As part of the Stage 2 of the Shah Deniz development, the gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and TAP.
The 23rd World Energy Congress kicked off Oct. 9 and will end Oct. 13. Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak are the initiators of the event.
The event is being held under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
